Poke your stomach (gently!) and your baby will likely squirm in response. This week marks the development of complex reflexes. The fetus can now open and close its fingers into fists, curl its toes, and make sucking movements with its mouth.
🍼 What's Happening With Your Baby
Now the size of a plum, your baby's most critical development this week is the completion of the placenta. This remarkable, disposable organ is now fully functional, taking over the crucial task of producing hormones and passing oxygen and nutrients to the baby.
The intestines, which had grown so quickly they herniated into the umbilical cord, have now moved safely back into the abdominal cavity where they belong.
The kidneys are actively excreting urine into the bladder. This urine becomes a major component of the amniotic fluid, which the baby swallows and excretes in a continuous cycle.
🤰 What You're Feeling This Week
Welcome to the cusp of the 'golden trimester.' The intense fatigue of the past two months is likely lifting as the placenta assumes its duties, giving you a much-needed energy boost.
You might notice an increase in vaginal discharge, known as leukorrhea. This thin, milky-white, mild-smelling discharge is normal and helps keep the birth canal clean and infection-free.
Dizziness or lightheadedness can occur, especially when standing up quickly. Your blood vessels are relaxing and widening due to progesterone, which can cause a sudden drop in blood pressure.
The Placenta Takes Command
The yolk sac has fully deteriorated, and the placenta is now the sole life-support system. It acts as the baby's lungs, liver, kidneys, and digestive system all at once.
✅ What To Do This Week
-
✦
Start doing Kegel exercises — Strengthening your pelvic floor muscles now can help prevent urinary incontinence later in pregnancy and assist with postpartum recovery.
-
✦
Announce the pregnancy (if you choose) — The risk of miscarriage drops dramatically after week 12. Many parents use this milestone to share their news with friends and extended family.
-
⚠️
Be mindful of skin changes — Your skin is highly sensitive right now. Avoid harsh chemical exfoliants and wear broad-spectrum sunscreen daily to prevent melasma (the 'mask of pregnancy').
"You made it. The riskiest, most exhausting phase is ending. The placenta has the wheel now, and your body is settling into a rhythm. Take a deep breath."
