The finishing touches are being applied. If you are having a boy, his testicles are making their final descent from the abdomen into the scrotum this week. Meanwhile, a thick layer of fat is wrapping around the baby's body, crucial for helping them regulate their own body temperature once they leave the warm incubator of the womb.

🍼 What's Happening With Your Baby

Now the size of a large cantaloupe, the baby's central nervous system is maturing rapidly, and the digestive system is almost ready for the complex task of digesting milk.

The vernix (the waxy coating) is beginning to thicken, while the lanugo (the fine body hair) is starting to shed into the amniotic fluid.

The baby is producing large amounts of meconium in their intestines. They are also urinating nearly a pint of fluid a day back into the amniotic sac.

🀰 What You're Feeling This Week

You might start feeling the baby 'drop' lower into your pelvis, a process called lightening. While this relieves the pressure on your lungs and stomach (making breathing easier), it drastically increases the pressure on your bladder and pelvic floor.

Braxton Hicks contractions may become more intense and frequent. You might find yourself stopping mid-sentence as your abdomen hardens.

Your vision might seem blurry or dry. This is a common and temporary side effect of pregnancy hormones altering fluid retention in your eyes.

Lung Maturity Threshold

If born at 34 weeks, a baby's lungs are usually developed enough that they will not face severe respiratory distress. While they may still need brief NICU support, the survival rate is overwhelmingly high and long-term complications are rare.

βœ… What To Do This Week

  • ✦
Familiarize yourself with labor signs β€” Review the difference between Braxton Hicks and true labor, the signs of your water breaking, and losing the mucus plug.
  • ✦
Make a postpartum recovery kit β€” Gather supplies for yourself: maxi pads, witch hazel, a peri bottle, dermoplast spray, and comfortable, loose clothing for the days following birth.
  • ⚠️
Watch for changes in vision β€” While mild dry eyes are normal, sudden blurred vision, seeing spots, or flashing lights is a critical warning sign of preeclampsia. Seek emergency care immediately.

"The shift is palpable. The baby drops lower, sitting heavy in your pelvis. Your center of gravity drops with them. The body is locking into position for the final act."
