You have reached the absolute maximum limit of human gestation. At 42 weeks, you are officially 'post-term'. Very few doctors will allow a pregnancy to continue past this point because the placenta is degrading rapidly and amniotic fluid levels are dropping dangerously low. If you haven't gone into labor, you will be medically induced this week.
πΌ What's Happening With Your Baby
The baby is fully grown and likely entirely out of room to maneuver. The skin is thick, opaque, and may be visibly dry or wrinkled.
The skull bones have hardened significantly more than a baby born at 39 weeks, which can sometimes make vaginal delivery slightly more challenging as the head doesn't mold as easily.
The baby is continuing to pass meconium into the amniotic fluid, increasing the risk of meconium aspiration syndrome during birth.
π€° What You're Feeling This Week
You are at the hospital or heading there shortly. If you are being induced, the process often starts with a cervical ripening agent (like Cervidil or Cytotec) or a Foley bulb to mechanically open the cervix.
Once the cervix is favorable, you will be given an IV of Pitocin to initiate strong, regular uterine contractions.
The emotional exhaustion of being 42 weeks pregnant will soon be eclipsed by the intense, primal adrenaline of active labor and the realization that you are finally about to meet your child.
The Journey Ends
The 42-week marathon is over. Whether by spontaneous labor, induction, or cesarean section, the pregnancy concludes this week. The incredible biological machine that built a human life is about to deliver it into your arms.
β What To Do This Week
-
β¦
Advocate for your pain management β If you are being induced with Pitocin and want an epidural, ask for it early. Do not wait until the pain is unbearable, as the anesthesiologist may be busy.
-
β¦
Focus on the breath β During contractions, your instinct is to tense up and hold your breath. Force yourself to take deep, slow exhales to oxygenate your muscles and the baby.
-
β οΈ
Trust your medical team β Post-term births carry slightly higher risks, such as meconium aspiration or fetal distress during contractions. Trust your doctors and nurses to monitor the baby closely and make the right call.
"This is it. The culmination of forty-two weeks of cellular division, stretching skin, and shifting bones. The pain of the threshold is the price of the meeting. You are ready."
