Your baby's nervous system is undergoing a massive upgrade. The nerves are being coated with myelin, a protective fatty substance that speeds up the transmission of electrical signals. This myelination allows for much more complex, coordinated movements—meaning those gentle flutters will soon become distinct, undeniable kicks.

🍼 What's Happening With Your Baby

Now the size of an artichoke, the baby is large enough that the classic 'baby bump' is usually visible to the outside world.

The ears are in their final position and stand out from the head. The baby can now hear your digestive noises, your heartbeat, and your voice with increasing clarity.

If you are having a girl, her uterus and fallopian tubes have formed. Remarkably, her ovaries already contain roughly 2 million primitive eggs—the maximum she will ever have.

🤰 What You're Feeling This Week

Your cardiovascular system is working overtime. Your blood pressure may dip lower than usual, causing dizziness if you stand up too quickly. However, the increased blood flow is also responsible for that famous, radiant 'pregnancy glow'.

You might start noticing swelling (edema) in your feet and ankles, especially at the end of the day. This is caused by fluid retention and the uterus pressing on the veins in your pelvis.

Leg cramps, particularly at night, are common. The exact cause is unknown, but it's likely a combination of carrying extra weight, compressed blood vessels, and changes in calcium and magnesium metabolism.

The Anatomy Scan Window Opens

Between weeks 18 and 22, you will undergo a comprehensive Level 2 Ultrasound. The technician will meticulously measure the brain, heart, spine, kidneys, and limbs to ensure the baby is developing perfectly.

✅ What To Do This Week

  • Eat foods rich in magnesium and potassium — If you are suffering from painful nighttime leg cramps (charley horses), eating bananas, avocados, and dark leafy greens can help.
  • Flex your foot during a cramp — When a calf cramp strikes in the middle of the night, immediately flex your foot upward (toes pointing toward your shin) to stretch the muscle and break the spasm.
  • ⚠️
Watch for severe swelling — While mild swelling in the feet is normal, sudden, severe swelling in your hands or face can be an early sign of preeclampsia, a serious blood pressure condition. Report this to your doctor immediately.

"Your center of balance has completely shifted. You might find yourself walking with a slight waddle. It's not clumsy; it's your body adjusting its mechanics to safely carry a heavy, precious load."
