Your baby is actively rehearsing for life on the outside. At 32 weeks, they are perfecting essential survival reflexes: sucking, swallowing, and breathing. If you have an ultrasound, you might even catch them sucking their thumbβ€”a self-soothing technique they are mastering before birth.

🍼 What's Happening With Your Baby

Now the size of a squash, the baby is taking up almost all the space in the uterus. The volume of amniotic fluid has peaked and will begin to slowly decrease as the baby claims the remaining real estate.

The skin is no longer translucent; the fat stores have built up enough to make the skin opaque and pink.

The fingernails and toenails are fully formed and may even need a trim shortly after birth to prevent the baby from scratching their face.

🀰 What You're Feeling This Week

Heartburn and acid reflux might be at an all-time high. The uterus is pushing your stomach so far upward that gastric juices are easily forced into the esophagus, especially when lying down.

You might experience 'lightning crotch'β€”sudden, sharp, shooting pains in your vagina or pelvis. This is caused by the baby's head pressing against the sensitive nerves in your cervix and pelvic floor.

Your blood volume has expanded by 40-50% to accommodate the baby, which means your heart is pumping harder and faster. You might notice occasional, harmless heart palpitations.

Survival Reflexes Mastered

The coordination between sucking, swallowing, and breathing is complex. The baby's mastery of these reflexes this week means that if born now, they would have an excellent chance of learning to feed efficiently.

βœ… What To Do This Week

  • ✦
Install the infant car seat β€” Hospitals will not let you leave without a properly installed car seat. Many local fire departments offer free inspections to ensure it is installed correctly.
  • ✦
Sleep propped up β€” If heartburn is keeping you awake, elevate your head and chest with extra pillows to prevent stomach acid from traveling up your esophagus.
  • ⚠️
Know the symptoms of preeclampsia β€” Preeclampsia risk rises significantly in the late third trimester. Sudden weight gain (more than 2-3 pounds in a week), severe swelling in the hands/face, and visual spots are red flags.

"The sharp jolt in your pelvis. The sudden breathlessness. Your body is running out of physical room, stretching to its absolute biological limit to protect the life inside."
