It sounds strange, but during week 1 of pregnancy... you aren't actually pregnant yet. Because it is nearly impossible to know exactly when conception occurs, medical professionals calculate your 40-week timeline starting from the first day of your last menstrual period. Your body is currently clearing the slate, shedding the old uterine lining to build a fresh, nutrient-rich environment for a future embryo.

๐Ÿผ What's Happening With Your Baby

There is no baby yet! Right now, your body is simply menstruating. However, deep inside your ovaries, an intricate biological race is beginning. Your pituitary gland is releasing Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH), prompting 15 to 20 tiny follicles to begin maturing.

Over the next two weeks, one of these follicles will become the 'dominant' follicle, absorbing the bulk of the hormones to grow rapidly while the others fade away. This dominant follicle contains the single egg that will eventually be released during ovulation.

Simultaneously, your estrogen levels are slowly beginning to rise, which will soon signal your uterus to start thickening its lining โ€” preparing the ultimate biological landing pad for a fertilized egg.

๐Ÿคฐ What You're Feeling This Week

Because you are technically on your period, the symptoms of 'week 1' are simply your typical menstrual symptoms. Your uterus is contracting to shed its lining, which is what causes the familiar cramps and backaches.

You might also feel fatigued as your hormone levels (estrogen and progesterone) drop to their lowest point in your cycle. Some women experience hormonal headaches, bloating, and mood fluctuations during this time.

The most important psychological shift right now is intention. If you are actively trying to conceive, this week is about laying the groundwork โ€” mentally and physically โ€” for the journey ahead.

The Biological Reset

This week is a fresh start. Your body is undergoing a complete cellular reset, preparing a pristine, perfectly designed environment to sustain new life.

โœ… What To Do This Week

  • โœฆ
Start taking folic acid immediately โ€” you need at least 400mcg daily. The neural tube (which becomes the brain and spinal cord) develops within the first 4 weeks, often before you even know you are pregnant.
  • โœฆ
Track your cycle meticulously โ€” noting the exact first day of your period is crucial for accurately dating your pregnancy later on.
  • โš ๏ธ
Eliminate alcohol and smoking โ€” establishing a clean biological environment now is critical. Studies show that toxin exposure during the earliest follicular development can impact egg quality.

"It feels like just another period, but it's actually the foundation. Every cramp and ache is your body preparing the soil for a seed that hasn't even been planted yet. Trust the cycle."
