Your immune system is passing on a powerful gift. This week, the placenta is actively transferring your antibodies directly into the baby's bloodstream. This maternal transfer gives the baby a critical shield of passive immunity that will protect them from various infections during their first few months of life in the outside world.

🍼 What's Happening With Your Baby

Now the size of a pineapple, the baby is gaining roughly half a pound a week. The skull bones are fully formed but remain pliable and unfused to allow the head to compress during vaginal delivery.

The pupils can now dilate and constrict in response to light filtering through the uterine wall.

The baby is likely sleeping the vast majority of the day, entering deep sleep cycles that help solidify the billions of neural connections forming in the brain.

🀰 What You're Feeling This Week

Insomnia often peaks around this time. Finding a comfortable sleeping position is difficult, and you may wake frequently to use the bathroom or change sides to relieve hip pain.

You might notice your belly button is fully popped, and the skin around it feels incredibly sensitive or even slightly numb due to extreme stretching.

Clumsiness increases as the relaxin hormone reaches its highest levels, making your joints feel loose and wobbly. Take extra care when walking on stairs or uneven surfaces.

The Transfer of Antibodies

The passive immunity transferred this week provides the newborn with crucial protection against diseases you have encountered or been vaccinated against, lasting until their own immune system matures.

βœ… What To Do This Week

  • ✦
Finalize your pediatrician choice β€” Ensure the pediatrician is accepting new patients and is affiliated with your chosen hospital if you want them to examine the baby immediately after birth.
  • ✦
Practice perineal massage β€” Ask your doctor about starting perineal massage. Gently stretching the tissue at the base of the vagina a few times a week can help reduce the risk of severe tearing during delivery.
  • ⚠️
Stay hydrated to prevent early contractions β€” Dehydration is a common cause of irritable uterus and premature contractions. Keep a water bottle with you at all times.

"Your blood is passing down historyβ€”the memory of every illness you've fought and conquered is being encoded into their tiny immune system. You are their shield before they even take a breath."
