Your baby's brain is mapping out the five senses. Distinct, specialized areas are forming in the brain dedicated solely to processing smell, taste, hearing, vision, and touch. The neurological foundation for experiencing the world is now firmly in place.

๐Ÿผ What's Happening With Your Baby

Now the size of a large mango, your baby's arms and legs are finally in the correct proportion to each other and the rest of the body.

The kidneys are fully functional, and urine production is the primary source of amniotic fluid. The baby is swallowing the fluid, and the kidneys are filtering it continuously.

A waxy substance called vernix caseosa is now thickly coating the skin, protecting it from wrinkling in the amniotic fluid. A layer of fat is beginning to form beneath the skin, giving the baby a less translucent, more plump appearance.

๐Ÿคฐ What You're Feeling This Week

Round ligament pain can be particularly fierce this week as your uterus hits a rapid growth spurt. You may feel sharp, stabbing pains on one or both sides of your abdomen when changing positions.

You might notice skin pigmentation changes, such as the darkening of your nipples and the appearance of melasma (dark, blotchy patches on your face). This is driven by surging estrogen and melanocyte-stimulating hormone.

Your belly button might start to flatten out or even pop out. The expanding uterus is pressing directly against the abdominal wall.

The Senses Activate

The baby is actively exploring its environment. It touches its face, grasps the umbilical cord, and reacts to the taste of the amniotic fluid, which changes based on the foods you eat.

โœ… What To Do This Week

  • โœฆ
Wear broad-spectrum sunscreen โ€” To prevent or minimize melasma ('the mask of pregnancy'), apply SPF 30+ daily and wear a hat in the sun. Pigmentation changes are exacerbated by UV exposure.
  • โœฆ
Support your belly โ€” If round ligament pain is severe, consider wearing a maternity support belt. It gently lifts the heavy uterus, relieving tension on the stretched ligaments.
  • โš ๏ธ
Don't ignore sharp, constant pain โ€” While brief, sharp twinges (round ligament pain) are normal, severe pain that does not go away or is accompanied by bleeding should be evaluated by a doctor immediately.

"The baby's movements are becoming stronger. What started as a flutter is turning into a distinct thump. They are making their presence known, interacting with the boundary of the womb."
